Last checked 2026-10-14

Minimum cover the EU asks for on short-stay Schengen visas.

The rule

For a short-stay Schengen visa the EU asks for travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 for emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation, valid across the Schengen area for your trip. See the European Commission's official page.

Long stays are different

National long-stay visas (like Portugal's D7/D8) are set by each country and consulate.
