FAQ
How do you choose which insurers to list?
We list major international, nomad and Portuguese insurers commonly used by expats and visa applicants. Inclusion isn't paid.
Why do many prices say 'quote required'?
Most international insurers price by age, area and options and don't publish rates. We only show prices the insurer publishes.
Do you earn commission?
We may earn a commission through some links. It doesn't change the facts we publish. See our affiliate disclosure.
Does the D8 visa require health insurance?
Applications ask for travel or health insurance valid in Portugal. Confirm the current list with your consulate (see the official visa portal).
Can I use a Portuguese insurer?
Yes, many applicants do; check that the policy covers the dates and any repatriation the consulate asks for.
Is SNS registration enough?
Not for the visa application itself, since you are not yet resident. After residence you can register with your local health centre.
Is nomad insurance real health insurance?
Some nomad products are travel-medical only; others (like SafetyWing Complete) are fuller health plans. Read what each plan covers.
What is the minimum Schengen cover?
At least €30,000, valid in all Schengen states, covering emergency treatment and repatriation (per the European Commission).
Can I add US cover later?
Often only at renewal and subject to underwriting; check with the insurer.
