Nomad vs expat insurance: what's the difference?

Last checked 2026-10-14

Travel-medical nomad subscriptions versus full international private medical insurance.

Nomad insurance

Monthly, flexible, and often travel-medical: it covers new, unexpected problems while abroad. Usually limited home-country cover and few routine benefits. Examples: SafetyWing Essential, Genki.

Expat insurance

Annual international private medical insurance: inpatient core plus optional outpatient, maternity and dental, with higher limits and renewable cover. Examples: Cigna Global, Allianz Care, Bupa Global, AXA, William Russell.

Which to pick

Moving every few months? Nomad insurance. Settling somewhere for a year or more, have a family, or need routine care? Expat insurance, or a local plan where you live.
